'Unlocking Potential'

Year 6

Welcome to Year 6

Welcome to Year 6. Our team looks like:

6F – Miss Fulton and Miss Blackburn

6F P.E days are Tuesday (indoor) and Friday (outdoor)

6B – Mrs Bennett, Mrs Shaw and Miss Bath.

6B P.E days are Monday (inside) and Friday (outdoor)

All children have been given a levelled reading book and a reading for pleasure book. We are expecting children to be logging any reading on Boom Read 3x a week as part of their homework. This platform supports reading in class and any targeted support needed.

All of our other homework will bet set using online platforms too. Login details for sites and others, such as Times Table Rockstars or Reading Plus have been given to the children. The expectation is that we complete 30 TTR games and 5 Reading Plus texts a week. If you do not have access to online learning at home, time will be given time or support to complete any homework through the week at school. Y6 need to organise themselves to get this done each week as good preparation for high school.

Autumn 1

During this half term, we will be getting to know the children through various activities inside, and outside, of school. Both classes have already visited The Ledston Estate for an outdoor learning session and will be climbing Pen-y-ghent soon along with the residential trip to Lineham Farm after the half term.

In class, we will be continuing our Talk for Writing journey in English and adding to our mathematical knowledge using Maths No Problem. In Science we are looking at the importance of the circulatory system and in Geography we will be learning about maps and how to use them – very useful for our upcoming trips.

We have even more to look forward to this half-term as we get back into the school routine. Updates will be posted on our year group page, the Facebook page and Schoop.

Thank you, the Y6 team

Autumn 2

WOW. What an amazing first half term in year 6 for all children. They have all settled so well and have already created some fantastic pieces of work. All staff were particularly impressed with their debate style texts on whether “Mobile phones should be banned in schools”.

In English this half term, we will continue to develop our fiction and non-fiction skills by looking at Pie Corbett’s story ‘Kidnapped’. In Maths, we will start our work on Fractions as well as continue to recap the four operations from Autumn 1. In Science, we will look at the theory of evolution and inheritance.

In the wider curriculum, we will look at Ancient Greece, challenge ourselves to trying Pilates and coding in ICT.

This half term, both Year 6 classes will have their residential trip to Lineham Farm. The children will hopefully love their weeks’ away and it will give them life-long memories to share with friends.

Spring 1

A great start to 2023 by our Year 6 classes. They have come back after the Christmas break with lots of resilience and determination for the spring term. We are beginning to prepare the children for their upcoming SATs in May and would really appreciate the support from home with weekly homework: 5 Reading Plus texts plus 1 Vocabulary and completing the sessions set on Times Table Rockstar.

Spring 1 will see the children continuing to develop their fictional writing skills by creating a defeating the monster story. In maths, we will be working on the decimals unit and finally converting units of measure. Our Friday maths session is dedicated to arithmetic skills. Reading sessions will continue to focus on different reading texts and building on the existing skills of inference, vocabulary, sequencing and predictions.

Across the wider curriculum, Year 6 will learn about mountains in the Geography unit and revise light in their science lessons. In R.E, we will look at Sikhism and how Sikhs choose to live their life. In art, we will master graffiti art and by the end of the half term, will create a piece of art with their name in graffiti style.

Finally, we would like to thank you for your continued support during this important year of primary school.

Spring 2

Even though Spring 1 was 5 weeks, we were still able to achieve lots during this half term. The Year 6 children are thriving in all areas of their learning and we would once again like to thank you for you ongoing support. Both classes, as well as the whole school, thoroughly enjoyed celebrating diversity on Culture Day and we are already looking forward to celebrating it again next time.

Spring 2 brings continued preparation for KS2 SATs – which are the week beginning 13th May 2024. We will be able to answer questions or queries at an upcoming SATs meeting or Parents’ Evening (11th March and 12th March). Additionally, Year 6 children can find out their high school allocation on 1st March 2024. We will begin preparing for high school transition in Summer 1.

Throughout this half term, we will be writing a range of texts (instructions, fiction and a recount), revising old Maths topics, as well as cementing the learning of new ones, completing our graffiti art, revising SPaG topics, creating gymnastics routines, learning new ICT skills and of course, having as much fun as possible.

Please ensure you are supporting and encouraging the completion of homework each week: Reading Plus and TTRS. This not only supports their learning within school but is also key preparation for their high school journey. Do not hesitate to speak to a member of staff in Year 6 if you have any questions, queries or problems.

Thanks again, the Year 6 team!

Summer 1

The Year 6 Team are extremely proud of the children for their super efforts throughout Spring 2. Every child should be proud of the work they have put in to their learning. Summer 1 again brings continued preparation for KS2 SATs – please see below for important details regarding this week. Additionally, as Year 6 children are now aware of their high school allocation, we will begin preparing the children for hight school transition.

Throughout this half term, we will be writing a range of texts (narratives, instructions and discussions), revising old Maths topics, as well as cementing the learning of new ones, revising SPaG topics, creating dance routines, learning new ICT skills and of course, having as much fun as possible with an exciting reward trip planned for the last week of half term.

Please ensure you are supporting and encouraging the completion of homework each week: Reading Plus and TTRS. This not only supports their learning within school but is also key preparation for their high school journey. Do not hesitate to speak to a member of staff in Year 6 if you have any questions, queries or problems.

SATs Week Breakfast Club (13th-16th May 2024)

It is more important than ever that all children have 100% attendance this week as if they miss an assessment, they will not have another opportunity to take it.

With that in mind, we ask that all Year 6 children attend breakfast club during SATs week so that we can best prepare them for their assessments each day. They will be provided with an extra special breakfast, including fresh fruit and pastries. Your child can eat breakfast at home and still attend the breakfast club. School opens at 7:45am and we ask that Year 6 children are in school no later than 8:10am. This is at no extra cost.

Thanks again, the Year 6 team!

Summer 2

What a journey we’ve been on. The last few months have been a rollercoaster but the children have worked incredibly hard to make sure they have achieved their potential in the KS2 SATs. We cannot thank your support enough and hope this continues for the (short) remainder of time the children have left at Castleton.

Even though SATs are now behind us, we still have the rest of the curriculum to keep going with. English lessons will continue with the children confidently planning, writing, editing and publishing a range of texts and Maths lessons will see us go back to units and extend on learning further ready for the high school curriculum.

In PSHE we will be looking at life changes – especially high school transition. History will focus on past events of democracy in Great Britain and we will be finding lots of opportunities for the children to be taking part in group work and projects across other areas of the curriculum.

We have trips outside of school coming up as well as all the leavers celebrations towards the end of the half term. We will inform you of these as soon as possible.

Thank you again for your support throughout the year and for the final stages!
The Year 6 team.
