Year 3
Welcome to Year Three
We are the Year 3 classroom teachers; Mr Coulson (3C) and Mrs Vause (3V), alongside us are Mrs Holburt, Mr Coleman, Miss Macedo and Miss Kitchen (Teaching assistants).
We will also have Mrs Garlick with us for some of the day. We are incredibly excited to be teaching your children this year in the Year 3. We practice an open-door policy in our classrooms, which means if parents have any questions or need anything from us, please do not hesitate to contact us. You can also catch either of us at the end of the day. We aim to respond to any queries as soon as we can. We are so looking forward to working with your children this year, and we cannot wait to see the fantastic achievements that they are going to make.
Autumn 1
In Year 3 this half term, there will be lots of learning taking place. In English, we will be learning about using speech in stories using The Magic Brush and writing explanations for how a magic brush works. In Maths, we will be focusing on place value with numbers up to 1000 and basic calculation. For our wider curriculum topics, we will be learning all about Ancient Egypt! We will also be learning about much more, including forces and magnets (Science) What do Christians believe about a good life? (RE) Hockey and team- building (PE) and finally making healthy choices (PSHE).
P.E Day
Year 3 PE lessons are on Tuesday (outdoor) and Thursday (indoor). Please make sure your child is wearing their school PE kit.
Reading app
This year we are going paperless! We will use a digital reading record app through go-read.co.uk to monitor reading records. Parents can download the BoomReader app to share information with school and no more worry about finding lost record books! Children are allowed to read anything from recipes or instructions for a game, to bedtime stories with little siblings or their school reading book. Any reading counts! We expect all children to read three times each week at home to help them develop into confident readers.
Times Tables Rockstars
Year 4 children all around the country will be tested on their times tables knowledge. Being confident with times tables helps children in many areas of maths curriculum such as short division, multiplication, word problems, and many more. In class, we support the learning of times tables regularly. As the saying goes, practice makes perfect. We, therefore, strongly recommend you encourage your child to practice their times tables at home regularly or better still every night! All your hard work and theirs will make them a Times Tables Rock Star
Autumn 2
Our English learning is based on the Polar Express. We will be writing stories and non-fiction texts based on this magical tale.
In maths, we will be learning how to multiply and divide.
In science, the children will be learning all about light.
In geography, we will be looking at climate zone. We will compare our climate to that of Egypt.
In D.T., the children will learn about how to design and create a product. We will use that knowledge to create a fridge magnet.
We will also be going on our first Year 3 trip.... the details will be with you shortly.
Finally, don't forget that our homework is 30 mins on TT Rockstars and 3 reads logged on Boom Reader.

Summer 2
Wow Year 3 - we are in our final half term of the year - let's make it a good one! You have worked so hard this year, and we are extremely proud of you.
In maths this half term we will be focusing our learning on 'Lines and Shapes' and 'Perimeter of Figures'. We will then consolidate all previously taught learning from the year in preparation for Year Four.
In English, we will be focusing our writing on ‘Dobber and the Silver Ring ’. Keep up the hard work Y3 and remember not to forget the basics when writing sentences. In reading, we are continuing to develop our fluency and comprehension skills. In spelling, we are continuing to develop our skills using phonics and spelling rules. Keep practising any spellings you find tricky at home as this will really help you as you move into Year Four. In science, we will be consolidating all of our previously taught learning from the year to ensure we have retained key knowledge and skills. In history, we will be finalising our topic 'Stone Age to Iron Age' by looking at Cave Art and how these were used to communicate. The children really enjoyed learning about what life was like for people back then! Our RE topic will answer the key question 'How do Jews remember God’s covenant with Abraham and Moses?'. In PSHE, children will be looking at staying safe online, their online reputation and 'copyright and ownership'. Finally, are having a big focus on Art/DT this half term to coincide with Sky Arts Week.
PE will continue to be on a Tuesday (outdoor) and a Thursday (indoor). Children need to come into school wearing their correct PE kit on these days (see uniform page for details).
