We do like to be beside the seaside!
Overview:
In this unit the children increase their locational knowledge of the world by zooming out of Leeds and the United Kingdom and zooming in on the costal town of Filey. They use their prior knowledge of Leeds and the local area to write a comparison of the similarities and differences of Leeds and Filey using their expanding geographical vocabulary. Children have the opportunity to visit Filey as part of their fieldwork and explore the human and physical features it has to offer - such as; beach, cliff, shops, sea and cathedral etc. Children will understand the difference between a city and a coastal town and what particular physical features they have. Children will use their prior knowledge of maps to devise a simple map of Filey and will develop an increasing understanding of Ordinance Survey (OS) Symbols.
