Our Local Area
Overview
This unit introduces children to the idea of looking at their local area. The children will focus on characteristics of local human and physical features. Children have the opportunity to explore their local area through the use of fieldwork and will create a recount of their experience using simple geographical vocabulary; including directional language. Children will explore, recognise and take photos of the main features and landmarks in their locality. They will use their knowledge of locational language to devise a map of the school grounds adding their own symbols. With support children will begin to understand the use of maps, atlases and globes.
