Marvellous Mapping
Overview
This unit consolidates children’s previously taught map skills. Their understanding of four- figure grid references are developed further and they are introduced to six – figure grid references. Children are taught the eight compass points and know that these can be used to plan routes. This is put into practice during a fieldwork opportunity to Lineham Farm where children use their compass and mapping skills to explore the grounds and explain their thinking to others. Children’s extensive bank of geographical vocabulary and their knowledge of six figure grid references and the eight points of the compass are used to explain the route from Castleton Primary to Lineham Farm in an extended piece of geographical writing.
