The Yorkshire Coastline

Overview

In this unit children will further explore coastal towns and deepen their knowledge and understanding of their features and significant problems they face such as erosion landforms and depositional landforms. Children will have the opportunity to visit another coastal town on the East Coast called Boggle Hole in Whitby to investigate these issues further. During this visit they will use, read and annotate OS maps (Digimap), including the use of grid references with a key and its symbols to navigate around the area and locate different features in the area, such as sand/shingle beaches. Children will continue to recap on and develop their understanding of the key human and physical features and the OS symbols associated with them. They are able to use arial images of Whitby to describe these key human and physical features. Children are able to represent their fieldwork observations using photographs, sketch maps and notes and use geographical language to explain the process of erosion in an extended geographical piece of writing. Children will be introduced to the concept of four– figure grid references and these references can be used to locate places and mark places on a map.
